Hacker Guccifer Wants to Finish Prison Sentence in…

The hacker known as Guccifer said Friday he was asking a court to let him finish his prison sentence in Romania and not be extradited to the United States, The Hill reported Friday.

Marcel Lehel Lazar, known as Guccifer, was arrested in 2014 and is serving a seven-year sentence in Romania. After he finishes that sentence, he is set to serve 52 months in a U.S. prison. But, Lazar told Fox News on Friday he wanted “to serve that in my country.”

Lazar was sentenced for hacking Sidney Blumenthal, an ally of former 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. He also is thought to have hacked the computers of Dorothy Bush Koch, Sen. Liza Murkowski, R-Alaska, and others.

Lazar is known for inadvertently discovering that Clinton, who was Secretary of State at the time, was using a private email server. Her alternate email address was found in Blumenthal’s emails. Lazar reiterated to Fox News that he had hacked Clinton’s private server — however, U.S. officials could not substantiate the claim following an investigation.

Another hack last year of the Democratic National Committee’s mail system was not conducted by Russians, but rather was done by U.S. government agencies, Lazar suggested.

“The Russians are more skillful than this to let tracks in the documents [point] to them,” he said. “So, this is made by the other guys who wanted [to point] to the Russians.”
