North Korea Targets US Bombers; The Cowboy Compromise

Check out Bill’s Daily Briefing for Monday, September 25, where we round up the day’s biggest headlines for your perusal. Take a look.

North Korea Targets US Bombers

The war of words between President Trump and Kim Jong Un continues unabated.  North Korea contends that the USA has essentially declared war on the nation and is vowing to shoot down any United States bombers that fly near the Korean peninsula, even those that are outside North Korean airspace.

Warmbier’s Parents: North Korea “Terrorists”

Fred and Cindy Warmbier, whose son Otto died in June, just days after returning home from North Korea in a coma, are denouncing the Kim Jong Un regime as “terrorists.”  They allege that the Pyongyang government kidnapped and tortured Otto, a 22-year-old college student, after he was arrested there last year.

Iran Missile Launch Was a Fake

President Trump responded angrily to a test launch supposedly carried out by Iran last weekend.  But it now turns out that the Iranians never actually fired the missile and that the video they released was seven months old.  Iran maintains that it has the right to test ballistic missiles as long as they are “defensive.”

The Cowboy Compromise

Prior to last night’s Monday Night Football game on ESPN, the Dallas Cowboys and their patriotic owner Jerry Jones found a way to compromise.  The boss and his players came onto the field and knelt briefly, then stood when the flag came out and the National Anthem was played.  Jones had previously expressed disapproval of the growing protests around the league.

The self-proclaimed “worldwide leader in sports” has become almost indistinguishable from a left-wing cable news channel.  ESPN devoted much of Monday to discussing the National Anthem controversy, with most analysts and hosts blasting away at President Trump.

Congresswoman Takes a Knee

Sheila Jackson Lee, named by her employees as one of the most oppressive bosses in Congress, found another imaginative way to get some camera time yesterday when she took a knee in support of the NFL protests.  She also managed to call the president’s criticism of protesting athletes “racist.”

Hillary Piles On, Makes the NFL a Racial Issue

Hillary Clinton, continuing her book tour in invariably very friendly venues, sat down with a sympathetic interviewer yesterday and took aim squarely at President Trump.  Even though the president never mentioned race in the NFL matter, she accused him of “attacking black athletes” while giving a pass to “white supremacists, neo-Nazis, Ku Klux Klanners, or Vladimir Putin.”

NBA Coach Assails Trump

Gregg Popovich, coach of the San Antonio Spurs and one of the most respected men in the NBA, has also joined the fray.  “Pop” now says America has become “an embarrassment in the world,” and also compared the president to a 6th grader.

Voting Day in ‘Bama

Two Republicans square off today in Alabama, each claiming to be the best person to pursue the conservative cause.  The incumbent is Luther Strange, who is backed by President Trump and many establishment Republicans.  In the other corner is Judge Roy Moore, who is endorsed by arch-conservatives Steve Bannon, Sarah Palin, Sebastian Gorka, among others.  The winner will face Democrat Doug Jones in the general election.

Puerto Rico’s Unimaginable Misery

The United States territory of Puerto Rico is suffering through a catastrophe unlike any in its history.  Most of the island is without power and there are shortages of food, clean water, and gasoline.  Making things worse, Puerto Rico was already bankrupt and, as a territory, has little leverage in Washington.

Trump Team Regularly Used Private Email

The New York Times reports that a half-dozen of President Trump’s top aides used their own private email accounts to communicate on White House issues.  Named in the article are Jared Kushner, Ivanka Trump, Steve Bannon, Reince Priebus, Gary Cohn, and Stephen Miller.

Palestinian Murders Three Israelis

Two Israeli security guards and one policeman were shot dead by a Palestinian gunman in the West Bank.  The incident will surely complicate matters for thousands of Palestinian workers who cross through checkpoints every day to work in Israel.  Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed that the killer’s home will be destroyed and work permits for his family will be revoked.

Bali Volcano Evacuation Expands

As Indonesia’s Mount Agung volcano still threatens to erupt on the island of Bali, about 75,000 residents and tourists have evacuated the immediate area.  There have been hundreds of tremors every day recently, which usually indicates the strong possibility of an imminent eruption.  Agung’s last eruption came in 1963, when more than 1,000 people died.

Lindsey Graham on Health Care: Never Say Die

Senator Lindsey Graham, co-sponsor of the latest Republican health care proposal, is either delusional or knows something the rest of us do not.  Last night he vowed to “press on” with efforts to repeal and replace ObamaCare, and even seemed to harbor some faint hope that his current plan will squeak through.  Graham also defended his good buddy Senator John McCain, who has announced his opposition to the bill.

Republicans Introduce DACA Alternative
A trio of Republican senators have crafted a new bill they say will solve the thorny issue of illegal immigrants who were brought to the USA as children.  Their legislation would establish a path to a green card and perhaps even citizenship for individuals who came to the USA when they were under 16 years of age.

Ouch! One in Four Americans Can Name Three Branches

According to a very thorough survey conducted by the Annenberg Public Policy Center, Americans are stunningly ignorant of their government.  More than one-third could not name a single right enshrined in the First Amendment, and only one in four was able to identify all three branches of government.  The study also discovered that conservatives are able to name the three branches more frequently than liberals.
